Christmas hamper with chocolate: bean-to-bar from Utrecht

18 July 2026 · 2 min read

From cacao shipped by sailboat to bars with character: why chocolate from the city can be the heart of your hamper.

Chocolate is the safest product in a Christmas hamper - and precisely for that reason it pays to choose something special.

Bean-to-bar from Utrecht

The Chocolate Explorers works with cacao partly shipped to Utrecht by sailboat and pays farmers directly. The taste difference with mass-produced bars is immediately noticeable.

Pairing it

  1. 01Festive snacking mix or nuts from Noix Notenatelier for contrast.
  2. 02A Schulp juice for the morning.
  3. 03Alcohol-free beer from vandeStreek for the evening.
  4. 04City Gin or a Rondje Utrecht liqueur in a luxury hamper.

In practice

Chocolate keeps well and travels well, as long as it isn't too warm on delivery. Handy if you want to buy early.

Tip: bean-to-bar is the difference people taste

With bean-to-bar, the chocolate maker takes the bar from bean to finished product, often with beans bought directly from farmers. The taste difference versus mass chocolate is significant, and the story is concrete: origin, farmer, percentage. Put that on the card.

Tip: build a mini tasting

  • A milk chocolate around 40% as the starting point.
  • A dark around 70% as the middle ground.
  • An outlier: 85%, salted, or with coffee.

Three bars in ascending intensity turn chocolate into an activity rather than a snack.

Tip: store and ship at the right temperature

Chocolate blooms above 20 degrees and absorbs odours. Keep boxes cool and dry, away from coffee or cleaning products, and avoid delivery on warm days. Bloomed chocolate is still edible, but it looks like a mistake.

Tip: account for allergens and diets

Nuts and milk appear in chocolate more often than people expect - including as factory traces. Provide at least one vegan and one nut-free option, and list allergens legibly on the insert card rather than only in small print on the wrapper.

Tip: pair it with one drink

Chocolate shows best with coffee, port, stout or a spiced tea. One considered pairing in the hamper means the bar gets tasted rather than simply eaten.
