Putting together a large hamper requires choices. Here's how to make sure volume doesn't come at the expense of quality.

With a large hamper, the biggest pitfall is filler: extra items that only take up space. Do it differently.

Build a large hamper around three highlights

Add up to three smaller products, no more. That way the hamper stays generous yet usable.

An impressive box that doesn't fit on a bike becomes an office problem. For self-transport, stay under five kilos, or deliver straight to homes. Just ask: who takes it by bike, who by car, who wants it delivered?

• Replace four small bags with one large bag from a better maker.
• Use paper filling that fills the box without adding weight.
• Place the biggest product at the back so it stands out on opening.

Large hampers almost always get shared: with housemates, family or the team. So choose shareable formats - a bottle rather than a can, a large bar rather than a single praline, a bag of nuts rather than a handful.

Tip: one big hamper per two people can be smarter

For couples working at the same company, or small teams on one site, one generous shared hamper is often more fun and saves packaging and delivery. Offer it as a choice, not as a cutback.
