Elegast Cider: saving standard orchards, one bottle at a time
15 August 2026 · 3 min read
Craft cider from the Utrecht region, made with Dutch apples and pears from organic standard orchards.
Standard fruit orchards are the quiet side of the Dutch landscape: scattered, old-fashioned, and increasingly hard to keep profitable. Elegast Cider came up with a fair business model that solves exactly that problem.
The apples and pears come from organic standard orchards in the Utrecht region. No monoculture, no sprayed trees, but trees that have sometimes stood in the same spot for decades.
From that fruit they make craft cider: fresh, lightly tart, with a flavour you won't find in an industrial cider made from concentrate.
More importantly, every bottle sold helps keep those orchards alive. Without demand, the trees disappear; with Elegast Cider, they stay standing, orchard by orchard.
In our boxes, this is the cider you can explain to colleagues in one sentence: a lovely fresh bottle, with a landscape behind it that would otherwise vanish.
